Minimum Wage Not Enough for Making a Living

Turkey Monitor asked the minimum wage expectation of voters for better making a living in December 2021. Since its announcement, the minimum wage purchasing power already depreciated 48,7% in January 2022. Moreover, electricity and natural gas price hikes also increased the pressure on the Turkish community. Turkey Monitor asked this time how much the new minimum wage is enough for making a living. 77% of voters think that the new minimum wage is not enough for a living although the expectation of the new minimum wage was 4403 Turkish liras in December 2021.

Higher inflation turned the face of the community to the president’s announcement of a new minimum wage. The expectation of voters was 4403 Turkish liras according to the Turkey Monitor December survey.  The new minimum wage almost met the people’s needs and was announced 4250 Turkish liras with a 50% increase. However, the cost of living is still an issue for the Turkish community. According to TURSTAT, the consumer price index increased to 48,7%, the highest recent level, in January 2022.

Turkey Monitor asked voters’ opinion on 4250 Turkish lira minimum wage due to the increasing prices of goods and electricity and natural gas price hikes. 77% of total participants think that the minimum income wage is not enough by giving point 4 and less than that. The situation is also the same in each party group. More than half of each party voters believe that minimum wage is not enough although it was raised just a month ago.
